- Best on: Cotton t-shirts, small runs, complex full-colour designs.
- Not great for: Very large bulk orders on cotton (screen printing is cheaper at scale).
- Pricing in Kampala: From UGX 15,000 per piece (A4 size).
- Minimum order: 1 piece.
- Turnaround: 2โ4 working days.

How DTF actually works
Think of DTF as a high-tech sticker that becomes permanently bonded to fabric under heat. The sticker is made from special ink and a heat-activated adhesive powder โ and once applied, it stretches, washes, and wears with the garment.
The whole thing happens in three simple stages:
Print the film
Your design is printed mirrored onto special PET film โ CMYK colours then white ink base.
Add the adhesive
Hot-melt powder is sprinkled on the wet white ink and cured in an oven. This becomes the glue.
Heat press it
The film is pressed onto the garment at 160ยฐC. Peel off the film โ the print stays bonded.
That's it. It's fast, it's versatile, and it works on almost any fabric โ which is why it's become the go-to method for small-run custom printing.
Why people in Kampala love DTF

Full-colour + white
CMYK plus white means bold, opaque prints on dark cotton โ no compromise.

The materials โ an overview
Printer: DTF printers use piezo printheads (Epson i3200 or XP600). Dual-head machines handle CMYK + white. Key specs: print width (A3+ to 24"), resolution 720โ1440 DPI, white ink circulation (critical โ white settles fast), and RIP software.
DTF ink: CMYK + white water-based pigment ink โ not sublimation dye.
DTF film: PET film, 75 microns, matte print side. Cold-peel film for fine detail; hot-peel for production speed.
Hot-melt powder: TPU (thermoplastic polyurethane), 80โ200 micron particle size. Fine powder (80โ120) for detail; coarse (150โ200) for heavy-use garments.
Curing oven: Inline powder shaker + oven cures the powder at 150โ160ยฐC for 2โ4 minutes.
The DTF process โ step by step
1. Design prep: Print mirrored, CMYK colour mode, 300 DPI. RIP software generates a white underbase layer for dark garments. Set ink limits (60โ80% for colour, 40โ60% for white).
2. Print the film: Load film, print CMYK layer, print white layer over CMYK. Allow 30 seconds for white ink to gel.
3. Powder application: Film moves through the powder shaker. Powder sprinkles onto wet white ink. Vacuum removes excess.
4. Cure the powder: Oven at 150โ160ยฐC, dwell 2โ4 minutes. Powder melts from white powder to clear glossy layer. Properly cured film is dry to touch and flexible.
5. Transfer to garment: Pre-press garment (3โ5s) to remove moisture. Place film face-down. Press at 160ยฐC for 10โ20 seconds, medium-heavy pressure. Peel cold for detail, hot for speed.
6. Post-press (optional): Cover print with parchment or Teflon, press again 5โ10s. Improves wash durability and softens hand feel.
Common problems and fixes
| Problem | Cause | Our Fix |
|---|---|---|
| Cracks after wash | Undercured film, low pressure | Longer cure, higher pressure (40+ PSI) |
| White ink clogs | Ink settled (not circulated) | Daily circulation, frequent head cleaning |
| Blotchy transfer | Cold spots, uneven pressure | Calibrated press, leveled platen |
| Dull colours | Wrong RIP profile | Recalibrated RIP, test chart |
| Film curls | Humidity, old film | Dry storage, fresh stock |
| Too thick hand feel | Too much white ink/powder | Reduce white ink %, use fine powder |
Wash durability
Properly produced DTF prints last 50+ washes. To maximise lifespan:
- Wash inside-out at 30โ40ยฐC
- No fabric softener โ degrades adhesive
- Tumble dry low or hang dry
- No ironing directly on print โ use cover sheet
DTF on different fabrics
| Fabric | Result |
|---|---|
| 100% Cotton | โ Excellent |
| Cotton-Poly blend | โ Excellent |
| 100% Polyester | โ Good (slightly stiffer hand) |
| Canvas | โ Excellent |
| Denim | โ Excellent |
| Leather / PU | โ Good (test first) |
