Sublimation Printing in Kampala

Ever seen a full-colour sports kit where the print seems to be part of the fabric โ€” no edge, no peeling, no cracking? That's sublimation. Here's the quick version, then the deep version if you want it.

โšก In 30 seconds

  • What it is: Heat turns solid dye into gas that bonds into polyester โ€” no ink layer on top.
  • Why people love it: Full-colour, all-over prints. Never fades, cracks, or peels.
  • Best on: Sports kits, cycling jerseys, mugs, caps, phone cases, metal plates.
  • Not great for: 100% cotton. Sublimation requires polyester.
  • Pricing in Kampala: Custom mugs from UGX 25,000; sports kits from UGX 45,000.
  • Minimum order: 1 piece for mugs. 10+ for all-over sports kits.
  • Turnaround: 2โ€“5 working days.

Is sublimation right for you?

โœ…

Yes โ€” choose sublimation if...

  • โ€ข Your garment is polyester or poly-rich
  • โ€ข You want full-colour, photo-quality prints
  • โ€ข You need all-over edge-to-edge coverage
  • โ€ข You're printing sports kits, cycling jerseys, esports jerseys
  • โ€ข You're branding mugs, caps, mousepads, phone cases
  • โ€ข You want a zero hand-feel print
โŒ

Skip sublimation if...

  • โ€ข Your garment is 100% cotton (use DTF instead)
  • โ€ข You need white ink on dark fabric
  • โ€ข You want neon or metallic colours
  • โ€ข You need prints on nylon, leather, or wool
  • โ€ข You're printing 1 piece on a mixed-fabric item

Not sure? Send us your garment specs โ€” we'll tell you honestly if sublimation fits.

How sublimation actually works

Imagine if the ink became part of the fabric instead of sitting on top of it. That's sublimation.

A solid dye is printed onto special paper. Then heat (around 190ยฐC) turns that solid dye directly into a gas โ€” it skips the liquid stage entirely. The gas penetrates the polyester fibres and locks in. When it cools, the dye is permanently fused inside the fabric. You can't feel it, because there's nothing on the surface.

The whole thing happens in three simple stages:

1๏ธโƒฃ

Print the transfer

Your design is printed mirrored onto special sublimation paper using disperse-dye ink.

2๏ธโƒฃ

Apply heat

Heat press at ~190ยฐC turns the solid dye into gas. It penetrates the polyester.

3๏ธโƒฃ

Peel the paper

The dye has already bonded into the fabric. Nothing left on top โ€” the print IS the fabric.

That's why sublimation prints feel like nothing. Because there's literally nothing on the surface โ€” the colour is inside the fibre.

Why people in Kampala choose sublimation

โ—†

Never fades. Never cracks.

The dye is inside the fibre. Nothing to fade, nothing to peel.

โ—†

Full-colour, all-over prints

No colour limit. Cover the entire garment edge to edge with no visible border.

โ—†

Zero hand feel

You can't feel the print at all. Stretch the fabric โ€” the print stretches with it.

โ—†

No setup fee

Unlike screen printing, there's no screen-making cost. Small runs are economical.

โ—†

Great for hard surfaces too

Mugs, phone cases, metal plates, ceramic tiles โ€” perfect for corporate gifts.

โ—†

Photo-quality detail

Complex designs, gradients, and photos reproduce beautifully.

Open the deep dive

The science โ€” why it works

Sublimation is a phase change from solid to gas โ€” bypassing liquid entirely. This happens at approximately 180โ€“200ยฐC. The dye penetrates softened polyester fibres and bonds into the polymer structure. Once cooled, the dye is permanently locked inside.

Polyester compatibility

100% Polyester100%โœ… Perfect
Poly-rich blend65%+โœ… Good
50/50 Cotton-Poly50%โš ๏ธ Faded, vintage look
100% Cotton0%โŒ Doesn't work
Polymer-coated itemsCoatedโœ… Perfect

The process โ€” step by step

1. Design prep: CMYK color mode, 300 DPI, mirrored. Colors look duller before transfer and vibrant after.

2. Print the transfer paper: Sublimation ink (disperse dyes) on special transfer paper, at 720โ€“1440 DPI. Dry for 15โ€“30 minutes.

3. Heat press setup: 180โ€“200ยฐC, 40โ€“60 PSI, 30โ€“60 seconds for flat substrates.

4. Transfer: Face-down transfer paper + heat + pressure. Dyes vaporise, penetrate, bond.

5. Peel: Hot peel (immediate) for speed; cold peel (wait 30โ€“60s) for fine detail.

6. Post-press: Optional second press without paper to smooth surface.

Colour limitations

Sublimation has a smaller colour gamut than DTF or screen printing. Hard-to-hit colours:

  • Pure reds โ€” tend to shift orange
  • Deep blacks โ€” come out dark grey without heavy deposit
  • Neon greens โ€” impossible to reproduce accurately
  • Metallic gold โ€” impossible (no metallic pigment in sublimation ink)

Common questions

What can you sublimate?
Polyester fabric, polymer-coated mugs, caps, metal plates, phone cases, ceramic tiles, and polymer-coated wood. We do not sublimate on 100% cotton โ€” for cotton, DTF printing is the way to go.
How much does sublimation cost in Kampala?
Custom mugs start from UGX 25,000 per piece. Sports kits start from UGX 45,000 per piece. Pricing depends on quantity, size, and print complexity. Contact us for a firm quote within 24 hours.
Does sublimation fade?
No. Because the dye bonds inside the polyester fibre, there is no surface layer to fade, crack, or peel. The print lasts the lifetime of the garment.
Can you print all-over designs?
Yes โ€” this is where sublimation shines. All-over prints are printed on large-format transfer paper matching the cut pattern of the garment, then heat-pressed onto fabric. The garment is then cut and sewn. Minimum order for all-over prints: 10 pieces.
What is the minimum order?
1 piece for mugs, caps, and gift items. 10+ pieces for all-over sublimation on sports kits and apparel.
How long does production take?
2โ€“5 working days depending on the substrate and quantity. Mug and small-gift orders typically ship faster than apparel kits.
