Embroidery in Kampala

If you've ever seen a polo shirt with a raised, stitching-style logo on the chest โ€” that's embroidery. Here's the quick version, then the deep version, if you want it.

โšก In 30 seconds

  • What it is: Stitching your logo into fabric with a computer-controlled machine.
  • Why people love it: It never fades, cracks, or peels. Ever.
  • Best on: Polos, caps, jackets, fleece, uniforms, bags, towels.
  • Not great for: Photos, gradients, tiny text under 5mm.
  • Pricing in Kampala: From UGX 8,000 per piece (depends on size and quantity).
  • Minimum order: 5 pieces per design.
  • Turnaround: 3โ€“5 working days after digitizing.

Is embroidery right for you?

โœ…

Yes โ€” choose embroidery if...

  • โ€ข Your design has 1โ€“6 solid colours
  • โ€ข You need it to last for years
  • โ€ข You're branding staff uniforms or corporate wear

โŒ

Skip embroidery if...

  • โ€ข Your design is a full-colour photo or has gradients
  • โ€ข You need very small text (under 5mm tall)
  • โ€ข It's going on delicate or very stretchy fabric
  • โ€ข You need it printed on t-shirt fronts in bulk cheaply
  • โ€ข You want all-over or edge-to-edge coverage
  • โ€ข Your deadline is under 48 hours

Not sure? We'll tell you honestly which method suits your project.

How embroidery actually works

Imagine a sewing machine that never makes a mistake โ€” and can stitch a perfect logo in 3โ€“6 minutes that would take a human hours.

That's what a computer-controlled embroidery machine is. You feed it a stitch file (the digital map of your logo), and it moves the fabric under the needle in the exact pattern needed โ€” thousands of stitches per minute, every one precise.

The whole thing happens in three simple stages:

1๏ธโƒฃ

Digitizing

Your logo is turned into a stitch file โ€” the machine's "instruction manual".

2๏ธโƒฃ

Hooping

The garment is stretched tight in a hoop so it doesn't move during stitching.

3๏ธโƒฃ

Stitching

The machine stitches your logo automatically, colour by colour.

It's that simple. No ink, no drying, no curing. Just thread into fabric.

Why people in Kampala love embroidery

โ—†

It never fades

Thread colours don't wash out. That logo looks the same in year five as it did on day one.

โ—†

It never cracks or peels

Unlike printed logos, embroidery is stitched into the fabric. There's nothing to peel off.

โ—†

It looks expensive

Raised, textured, dimensional. Embroidery signals quality โ€” that's why premium brands use it.

โ—†

Costs less than you think

Once your logo is digitized (one-time), the per-piece cost is competitive with printing โ€” and it lasts 10x longer.

โ—†

Works on almost anything

Polos, caps, jackets, bags, towels, denim, fleece, aprons โ€” even leather.

โ—†

No minimum colour cost

Unlike screen printing (where each colour costs more), embroidery doesn't charge extra per colour.

For the technically curious โ€” the process, terminology, stitch types, stabilizers, and everything else. Expand below.

Open the deep dive

Digitizing โ€” the craft behind every good logo

Digitizing is converting your logo into a stitch file. It's not automatic. A good digitizer makes hundreds of decisions that determine whether the finished logo looks sharp or amateur.

Stitch types used:

  • Run stitch โ€” for outlines, thin lines
  • Satin stitch โ€” the shiny, dense stitch used on most logos, letters, and borders
  • Fill stitch โ€” for larger solid areas
  • Pattern fill โ€” for texture inside larger areas

Key digitizing decisions:

  • Underlay โ€” a base stitch layer that stabilizes the fabric
  • Pull compensation โ€” the design is slightly widened (0.2โ€“0.5mm) so fabric pulls don't cause gaps
  • Density โ€” typically 4โ€“5 stitches per mm for satin
  • Stitch order โ€” minimizes trims and prevents colour overlap issues

Stabilizers โ€” the hidden essential

Every embroidery job needs a stabilizer โ€” a backing material that stops the fabric from stretching or distorting during stitching.

  • Cut-away โ€” for knits and stretchy fabrics (t-shirts, polos)
  • Tear-away โ€” for woven fabrics and stable materials
  • Wash-away โ€” for towels, terry, delicate fabrics
  • Adhesive-backed โ€” for hard-to-hoop items (caps, small pieces)

Thread types

  • Polyester (40wt) โ€” standard, strong, colourfast. Used for 95% of work.
  • Rayon (40wt) โ€” shiny, softer, but weaker. For premium shine.
  • Cotton โ€” vintage look, but fades faster.
  • Metallic โ€” for special effects. Harder to run, higher thread breaks.

We use polyester 40wt by default. For a shinier "premium" look (like on luxury hospitality uniforms), we switch to rayon.

Cap embroidery โ€” a special case

Caps are the trickiest item to embroider. They need:

  • A special cap frame with a driver to hold the curved shape
  • A cap gauge to set the correct height
  • Lower stitch density โ€” caps have less room for error
  • Designs digitized with cap rules (no long horizontal satins, limited height)

For a premium look, we offer 3D puff embroidery on caps โ€” a foam layer under the stitching that raises the design for extra dimension.

Common problems and how we prevent them

Wash & care

Embroidery is durable but not invincible. To keep it looking sharp:

  • Wash inside out at 30โ€“40ยฐC
  • No bleach or fabric softener
  • Tumble dry low or hang dry
  • Iron on the reverse side โ€” never direct on the embroidery

Common questions

What is the minimum order for embroidery in Kampala?
Our minimum is 5 pieces per design. This covers digitizing efficiency while keeping smaller orders accessible for teams, events, and startups.
How much does embroidery cost in Kampala?
Embroidery pricing depends on the stitch count and garment. A typical left-chest logo costs between UGX 8,000 and UGX 25,000 per piece, depending on size and quantity. Larger back-of-jacket designs cost more. We'll send you a firm quote within 24 hours.
How long does embroidery last?
The lifetime of the garment โ€” often 5 to 10 years with normal wear. Embroidery is the most durable decorative method available. Unlike printed logos, it doesn't fade, crack, or peel.
Can you embroider caps?
Yes โ€” we have a dedicated cap press and cap frames. We also offer 3D puff embroidery for a premium raised effect. Send us your cap design and we'll show you a digitized mockup before production.
Do you digitize our logo for us?
Yes. We digitize every design in-house. There's a small one-time digitizing fee, but once it's done, we keep the file forever โ€” so future re-orders don't pay again.
How long does production take?
Standard turnaround is 3โ€“5 working days after digitizing approval. Rush service is available โ€” talk to us.
Do you print on customer-supplied garments?
Yes. Bring us your polos, caps, or jackets and we'll embroider your logo on them. We'll advise you on placement, size, and thread colours before we start.
